Produced in 1987 at a time when I was attempting to ‘corrupt’ the image making process by using reflective surfaces, internegs and seeing the negative as a starting point to a creative process. These images are one offs and use several negatives both ordinary and lith film. The colour is hand printed on the image in the colour darkroom in a technique close to colour posterisation. The image making process and individuality of the image-maker were interventionist processes.
Destruction and/or manipulation of the negative or original was to the fore with this work. The abstract potential of the photographic image in which the original image disappears and another image emerges was the main pre-occupation in this work. Experimenting with the image until the representational in photographic terms all but disappears and an image appears.
I wrote a paper on Concrete Poetry at this time and I was interested in how this work challenged language and the presentation of texts on the page.
